Ironically enough, the discussion topic at the meeting tonight was on our response to emotional situations. I need to do a better job of dealing with the results of ‘change’. I get to a point where I’ve got my work schedule, my workout schedule and my eating in balance and I get a week like the last weigh-in where I lost 4 lbs.
But then last week… the family went out of town and I lost control of all of those areas. I’m hoping that everything settles down this week.
Anton, A drum roll please…

It’s now spring, so I really don’t have any excuse for not working out and getting in shape. We had a gorgeous day here in the Inland Pacific Northwest, so I thought I’d take advantage of it and load my bike up for an excursion along the Columbia River trail near here. I wasn’t disappointed. But man, am I going to feel this one in the morning. I rode for nearly an hour, and I haven’t really been doing anything to work myself up to it. At 40, that’s probably not a good idea. D-ohh! In any event, here’s my first-ever (and possibly last-ever, depending on how thing goes) video exercise confessional.
Oops: At 2:48, I should have said “Pacific Ocean”, not “Columbia River”.
Now, go confess yourself.

I’ve got it right now. It’s only a few hours until I weigh-in this evening at my Weight-Watchers meeting.
What is it? Well, it’s that mode you get into on the day of your scheduled weigh-in where your willpower has an enhancement. The bonus is the affirmation or reminder when you see something you really shouldn’t eat and you tell yourself “I can’t have that, I’m weighing in today”.
Unfortunately, there are two problems here. One is the assumption that almost starving ourselves this day will have an impact on our weigh-in. It will have an impact, but maybe not the right one as we will most likely gorge ourselves after the weigh-in (sometimes to “celebrate” and other times to say “what the heck, I’m already up anyways”). This is bad, because we still do it every week. It is not a good behavior because we lie to ourselves that we’re doing good (if we lose) and it’s hopeless (if we gain in spite of starving ourselves).
The second problem is that the willpower we enforce is over-emphasized on this one day, and then relaxed to the point of non-existence the other six days. We don’t have a balance in our willpower and so we use it all up in one day and it doesn’t recharge fast enough for us to survive the challenges after the weigh-in.
In “
Fighting the Urge to Fight the Urge“, the author, Patrick Tucker, quotes from another publication that “People have a limited amount of self-control, and tasks requiring controlled, willful action quickly deplete this central resource. Exerting self-control on one task impairs performance on subsequent tasks requiring the same resource”.
If we use it all up leading up to the weigh-in, we have nothing left afterwards and end up gorging ourselves. We have to learn to “spread it out” a little and exercise that willpower throughout the week… not all day, but definitely all week. Our fight against ourselves is 24/7, weigh-in day is only hours.
If we practice, we can find ourselves using better affirmations such as “I won’t have that, I care about myself”.

I went out of town to visit the in-laws over Spring Break and missed 2 of my personal trainer sessions and therefore last weeks weigh-in. I did try to work in some exercise while in Ontario, including going to the gym I used to belong to when I lived there. I won’t say which one, but let’s just say that it hasn’t made any forward movement in the last 5 years.
Since being back home, I have made it to the RAC 3 times. I guess with all the Cadbury mini-eggs around, it could have been much worse. I really wanted to break 300 by the end of March.
Oh well… It will be soon… very soon!

As I mentioned on my blog, I had some positive feedback about my weight-loss and that was a boost I needed. I didn’t lose as much this week as I had hoped, but maybe it is because I am gaining muscle. I notice it more and more each week and so I know I’m still doing pretty good when I can gain muscle and still lose 0.6 pounds.
I also missed a day of exercise last week and I really missed it (though the feeling is quite different for the next couple of hours after a session). I’m really enjoying the exercise sessions and the results I’m seeing in the mirror and on the scale mean a lot to me.
I’ve got a ways to go, but I’m almost halfway to my personal goal and that is pretty cool.
Starting weight: 319.0 lb
Previous weight: 280.4 lb
Current weight: 279.8 lb
Current loss/gain: -0.6 lb
Total loss/gain: -39.2 lb
Distance to 50: 10.8 lb
Distance to WW Goal: 29.8 lb

You never know where you’ll get the encouragement you need. I got the boost this weekend as I got once before.
A few months ago, I was at my youngest brother’s house and his wife, Amanda, along with my other brother’s wife, Deanna, both were making fun of my jeans to my wife, Amy. They both commented that my jeans were way too baggy and I really needed to get some new ones.
I did and got rid of my size 48 jeans. It was a veiled compliment and I’ll take them as often as I can.
This past weekend, Amanda once again told me that I needed to get new jeans (maybe she thought I had not done so the last time). I was wearing size 44×32 relaxed fit jeans!
So today Amy and I went to Walmart and I picked up four more pairs of jeans. I got two 44×32 normal fit (not relaxed fit) for $10 each and two 42×32 normal fit at $8 each. For $36, I’ve got four new pairs of jeans.
This gave me the incentive to go through my closet and remove all of my 46×32 jeans (two blue, 1 black and 1 tan). I also went through my shorts and separated about 6 pair that were all 46 (the rest are also still 46, but I need to keep them until I replace them as well).
So soon, I’ll be offering the jeans and shorts as another “great” giveaway as Tony has done recently.

213! That is what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of .6 pounds.
Not a bad way to follow up last weeks big accomplishments. Now I just have to behave this weekend…or squeeze in some extra workouts and hopefully I can coast into vacation next weekend as a non-obese guy.
Have a great weekend and a Happy Easter.
p.s. Lot’s of great clothes still avaliable…for FREE at the Great Clothing Giveaway. Go Here to See.

I’m really pissed off! I have been writing down my food all week and staying within my points and working out almost every day and I gained 2.5 lbs. I was absolutely stunned… and as the scale sailed through the window of the Weight Watchers building, I wondered, “how did this happen?” The only thing that I think I can do better is to drink more water. I haven’t been paying attention to that and I’m sure that I haven’t been drinking enough. So for this week… I will drink 1/2 of my body weight in oz. of water while maintaining my workout schedule and counting my points each day, staying within my allotted range. I’m hoping this results in a great week next week! Here’s my damn stats:
Starting Weight (Aug. 1, 2007): 270 lbs.
Starting BMI: 37.7
Weight Last Week (Mar. 12, 2008): 259.5 lbs.
Weight Today (Mar. 20 2008): 262 lbs.
Current BMI: 36.2
Weight Change This Week: +2.5 lbs
Total Weight Lost: -8 lbs.
NEXT GOAL: 245 lbs. (17 lbs. to go)
