Slow and steady wins the race.
In the words of Dory… Just keep swimming!
I took my 4th Power Course today at the gym. The pain is starting to transition from Oh My God! I can’t lift my arms to I’m a bit stiff… but in a good way. The instructor on Tuesdays is one of those "Don’t forget to breathe" types. Do people really ‘forget’ to breathe?

And the beat goes on! I’m getting into a rhythm and I like it. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to give up sweets for this week.
I decided that I would spend one week not having added sugar with a few exceptions:
- Naturally occurring sugars in fruits and other basic foods.
- If someone offers me something homemade, I will enjoy a small portion of it so as not to hurt their feelings.
- My protein bars when necessary.
- In my oatmeal or cream of wheat when necessary.
That means I’ve had to say no to cookies, WW snack bars, ice cream, yogurt and a few other things. I’ve already eliminated sodas and sweetened cereals, but felt it was time to give myself a little boost this week. I want to make my goal of 50 pounds by summer and I’ve only a few weeks left.
Today was a great weigh-in since I lost 1.2 pounds in spite of enjoying two roast beef sandwiches on Saturday and two sandwiches last night, pancakes on Saturday and Sunday… and well, the list goes on. I’ve restarted my workout program after being off of it for about 10 days due to the trip to Seattle and longer working days because of the trip to catch up.
In addition to working out at lunch yesterday and today, last night I mowed the lawn (no biggie) and then took Jack for a walk. However, I decided to push myself and I jogged most of two laps around our block (about 1 mile total). Jack loved it at first, but by the end of it, he just wanted to walk.
This is five weeks straight of losses and usually when I realize that, I have a gain the following week… so I’m gonna work harder to make it six weeks and do it again and again.

One of the drawbacks to accountability is the stress it puts upon the one that is trying to be accountable. If you are screwing up, you really don’t want to tell anyone. But the nature of accountability requires disclosure.
Tonight at the WeightWatchers meeting we talked about ways to be successful during the summer months. If you have been following my posts for any length of time you know that I prefer the summer months for various reasons (like heat is better than cold, fresh fruits and veggies are better than the plastic ones in the winter and you cant beat driving down the street with the windows down and the music up!). The discussion got onto the topic of when to tell people that you are ‘on’ WeightWatchers. The problem is when you tell people you are trying to lose weight there are the eye-rolls and the yeah-rights. I didn’t tell very many people that I was doing this until I hit the 10% benchmark. But now, boy… MILLIONS know!
So there is the added pressure of coming here and reporting a THIRD week of weight-gain…

Forgive me FatBloggers, for I have gained…
Two consecutive weeks of GAINS!
This is how I begin to fail; I get complacent in the accomplishments I have already made and revel a little too much in the praise of others. Pretty soon, I’m not watching what I eat. In this case I didn’t track a single think I ate for the ENTIRE week, and some of it was NOT smart.
My wife encourages me by telling me that what I consider ‘overeating’ now would be merely a snack for the old “Tub O’Goo” me. So how do I fix this?
- Recognize the eating problems… fix them
- Recognize the direction I’m going… change it.
- Recognize the lack of movement… kick it in the a$$

100 weeks! Well, I’m not making as big a deal as I will of 104 weeks when I’ve been on WeightWatchers officially for 2 years straight.
At an average of 1 pound a week, I could’ve already been at my personal goal today. However, we all know that nothing is perfect and I, most of all, am NOT perfect.
I am very positive about this 0.2 pound loss. First of all, it shows that last week’s drop was no joke and that it “stuck”. Second of all, when I was doing my weight-training today, I noticed that my triceps seemed to feel as if they had more mass and a certain stiffness (not achy stiffness, but one of a muscle that is growing). Thus, my smaller loss may have been offset by muscle mass. Like my friend and Fatbloggers.net buddy, John T, pointed out on his blog, I’m noticing a difference in my chest and arms and it shows in the mirror. My wife definitely likes it.
I’m fairly upbeat and know that I’ve got to fight harder to make my Summer goal of 50 pounds lost.
Starting weight: 319.0 lb

Current weight: 276.2 lb
Current loss/gain: -0.2 lb

I use Gimp to put together a little comparison picture for your viewing pleasure tonight…

I’m starting to understand the shock/surprise in the voices of folks I meet on the street when they notice that I have ‘dropped a few’. This is a completely separate post… This lady that I have known since I moved here 5 years ago saw me for the first time in quite a while. She asked me the question that I get a lot, “How are you doing it?” I think they are asking if I have had the surgery. My stock answer, “I’m eating less and moving more”. I should start keeping track of the responses I get. I’d wager that at least 80% of the time their response is, “Oh, I wish I could do that”. Yeah, I used to think that too.
I didn’t have a good feeling about this week. I didn’t go over my points, but I only made it to the gym 3x and, well… I just didn’t have a good feeling.

The weather gets warmer and you know what happens? I totally neglect my blogging responsibilities. I was just noticing that I haven posted here since last Friday.
I would say that I was sorry to have neglected my legions of readers… but I’m not. I’ve been at track meets, softball games and getting some yard work done. The lawn looks great; of course it always does this early in the season. Its when the temperature got north of 90 that the lawn starts looking a bit ragged. I also replaced a faucet in the yard. Which included digging a hole 3+ feet deep and multiple trips to D&B for various parts. But now I have a beautiful new faucet that isn’t hidden by the grass (not fun to hit with the mower).
After a quick shower, I made it to WeightWatchers tonight.
But, before I get to the Tale of the Scale. I saw my Doctor today. He is very pleased at the progress I am making. The nurse was very flattering when the scale registered UNDER 300 lbs. for the first time. I asked him about setting my OFFICIAL WeightWatchers goal weight. When I was on the Weight Warriors challenge, I had my body composition taken twice. It told me that my lean body mass was 205 lbs. So I ask you, how can I make Weight Watchers BMI influenced goal range of between 165-180 lbs? The Doc didn’t think it was intelligent either. He walked me through a bunch of formulas and determined that an appropriate goal weight for me would be… 225 lbs.
My Traineo widget has been updated to reflect this change.

I fought back this week and succeeded. I ate less on the weekend than I normally would and did more yardwork. I wasn’t perfect, but I was better. Amy and I have decided to really push hard to do more “core” foods instead of the breads and sugars. I’ve had a few sodas more than usual, but I can count on one hand the number I’ve had in the last month. That alone is quite an accomplishment.
I had to switch back to the elliptical this week. My knees were giving me too many problems from doing the running. Well, at least I think that’s the cause, though I really would not be surprised to find out that it was another gout attack (they can affect more than just the feet). So today I took some gout medication and if I start seeing immediate results, then I know what else I need to do to get the gout out of the way. If not, then it was the running and I need to slow down on that.
In spite of my knees, I still did a workout (I had not had one in about 6 days so it was rough getting back into the routine). I gotta keep this up. I lost this week, but I had lost two weeks ago too and had a gain in between. I want to make 50 by summer and I’m running out of time.

Update
I woke up this morning and for the first time in almost two weeks, my knees and wrists are not hurting. Unfortunately, that means it was almost definitely a gout attack I’ve been enduring. I didn’t pay attention to the signs because I was rather skeptical about it being new joints (instead of the usual big toe or ankle joints). I’ll take one more dose of my medication to be sure it is on its way out, but I also now know what I can’t eat for a while to be sure it goes away completely (hello, it was stupid to have the margarita this past Sunday).
