Rick and I have posted here that we like a good beer. And since we live within 500 miles of some of the BEST beer in the country, it’s easy to become somewhat of a beer aficionado. Last week at the GP, they were out of my favorite Fat Tire Ale out of Colorado, so I gave Arrogant Bastard Ale a try (don’t you just love that name?). It was very good, with an agreeable ‘bite’ that you look for in your darker ales (only 4 points a pint).
OK, the purpose of this post is to comment on an email I got from WeightWatchers this morning. The email offers me a “Beer Cheat Sheet“. At first, I was expecting the typical run down of the mass market swill (Coors, Bud, Hamms, etc.), but I was pleasantly surprised that they offer suggestions for some pretty decent brew.
The most encouraging quote from the article:
Beer bellies are B.S. “This is a silly myth,” says Charlie Bamforth, Ph.D. chair and professor, Department of Food Science and Technology, University of California, Davis and author of Beer: Health and Nutrition. “If folks get fat from drinking beer it’s because their total calorie intake is too high and they are not working it off.”
So, Gentlemen (and Lady Rose)… hoist a frosty mug… it’s good for you!

I think our scale is possessed! At the least, it has a really bad sense of humor. We have one of these fancy digital scales that records weight losses and gains for up to four people. For the the last three weeks our scale has been messing with my head. After pressing the person two button, I step on the scale and rejoice at the massive weight loss. Then I think to myself, “There is no way I lost 7 pounds again this week.” So, I step off the scale, rezero it and step back on, only to be smacked in the eyeballs with disappointment as the real weight is revealed. I can almost hear those little circuits laughing.
Last week the scale said 257 when I first stepped on. For a brief moment tears of joy started to well in my eyes… and then I remembered, stepped off the scale, took a deep breath and tried again.
The biggest problem with this whole scenario is it makes my very respectable losses of two and three pounds initially disappointing because I have been tricked into the false hope that I am some sort of super loser.
Curse you, you mean old scale.
Man I hope my scale doesn’t read this. It might get ticked off and really start messing with me.

Hey everybody, hope you’re having a great weekend. It’s beautiful here in the Pacific Northwest, especially after a scorching mid-week. I rode my bike along the river this morning and enjoyed the coolish air.
I’ve upgraded to WordPress 2.2.1. If you run a custom WP install and haven’t done this yet, I highly recommend it. Just good maintenance, like getting your oil changed every 3-5,000.
I might not have a weigh-in this week, for the first time since I started this thing. I’m going to be in another town for a few days taking a class, and I’m not sure I can get away to a meeting. We’ll see, though, and I’ll definitely post here if I can make it happen.
On a personal note, I had some portraits taken with my boys last week, which I’ve uploaded to my Picasa Web Album. I need to see if I can dig out something for a “before” shot, which seems to be popular around here the last few days or so.
Have a great rest of the weekend. Be well.

I don’t know how they do it in other states, but here in Oregon our drivers licenses expire every eight years on our birthday. Well, my birthday is on Sunday (you should have started shopping for my gift by now) and I went into my friendly local DMV to get a new picture taken and update the info.
First off, I put my truthful weight on it for the first time, ever. Secondly, the picture. I didn’t think to scan the old picture before I surrendered it, but I think I have something to compare it to.
This picture was taken in August 2004.
And this is my mug shot from earlier today.
Granted the DMV is not known for its professional portraits and the goal is to look like you would when one of Pendleton’s finest pulls you over for a chat. I don’t know about you, but I see a significant reduction in the number of chins I carry around.

Another great week for me. I lost 4 pounds which puts me at 265. The past three weeks have me on an incredible high, but I am starting to dread the plateau that I am sure is right around the corner.
This is the first time in the past 10 years that I have managed to keep up with eating healthy and exercising at the same time. I hope that by continuing the combination I can stave off the plateau for a while longer.
Have a great weekend everybody.

Greetings all,
My name is Tony.
Here’s my quick bio:
I am 33 years old. I am married to my soul mate. I have two beautiful 18-month old daughters. I am a copywriter at an ad agency in Minneapolis, MN. I am 5′11 and as of this morning I weigh 269 pounds.
I have struggled with my weight ever since graduating from college, but over the last two years things have really gotten out of hand. While my wife was pregnant with our girls I sort of adopted her diet. A diet that was fine for a women who was eating for three, not so fine for someone eating for one. By January of this past year I was up to 288 pounds.
In the past six months I have yo-yo’d around. Eating healthy then binge eating then eating healthy again. I think I am finally ready to get serious. Part of getting serious has been telling my family and friends about my problem and asking for their help. That’s what brought me here as well.
Thank you Rick for inviting me to this site. I look forward to getting to know all of you better.
If anyone is intrested I am blogging daily about my ups and downs here. I am a writer though, so some of my post can get a little wordy.
Tony

It’s been 5 weeks since my last fatbloggers weigh-in, so I figure I’m way past due for an update! The last month has been hectic to an insane degree, having to finalize and release a big software project for work. Well, two days ago the release was completed, out the door, done. It feels good to have that monkey off my back for sure. I stuck to the diet through the stress though, and the weightloss has steadily continued.
At my last fatbloggers weigh-in 5 weeks ago, I was at 281 pounds. I started this week at 267.8 pounds, for a total loss of 13.2 pounds. That’s an average of 2.64 pounds / week, which I’m happy with. At that rate I’ll be a shell of my former self in less than a year.
It really helps me to take the “long term trend” approach to weight loss. I record my weight daily, but I’ve trained myself to just write down the number, and to not worry if the number is higher or the same than the day before. It’s all about the trend. As long as the trend continues downward over time, I know things are good.

I was checking out our incoming links this evening when I came across this article written by Kimberly Sherman at CalorieLab Calorie Counter News back on June 14. Take a few minutes to read it, it’s quite flattering. Thanks Kimberly!

This has been a great week for posts here at FatBloggers, maybe the best yet. I truly appreciate everybody’s candor, insightfulness, and willingness to open up. We’re all in this together.
I’ve included a section in our column called “Quotable”, which shows snippets of posts and comments that I’ve found particularly intriguing. If you’d like to nominate something some time, just let me know.
Also, our newest poll asks, as a percentage, how close are you to getting to your goal weight? I look forward to seeing how you’re all doing! Weekend, here we come…
