It’s all in the wrist
Ever wonder just how much you use your wrist on your dominant hand? Here’s my recipe for finding out just how important it is.
- Buy new running shoes (REAL running shoes).
- Put on new shoes for morning run.
- Proceed with run.
- About five minutes into the run, glance about enjoying the feel of the new shoes. Completely miss seeing the 1.5″ raised sidewalk block.
- Catch foot against the miniature roadblock.
- Land on concrete hitting it in 3 critical areas:
- Bang left knee against the concrete making it really hurt (but only slightly skinned).
- Scrape right arm on the concrete just below the elbow (thankfully, not landing on the elbow).
- Crush right wrist between the concrete and your fat self.
- Enjoy.
That being said, I spent about 15 seconds on the pavement, when I decided to get up quickly before someone called 911 seeing me apparently unconscious. I spent about 10 seconds standing there and gathering my sunglasses and towel from the ground. I spent another 10 seconds walking back to the office when the thought struck me (and, no, it didn’t hurt near as much as the concrete).
If this had happened halfway or three-quarters of the way through my run, I’d still have to finish it. So, dagnabbit, I’m gonna finish this thing. I did and still managed to do it in 53 minutes (my fastest is 51 minutes and I was going at a good pace when I decided to hug the pavement).
I’ve spent the rest of the day realizing just how important this wrist is to me. Even as I type this. However, I still feel good because I finished my run in spite of this setback. It was the first time I had seriously injured myself since I started working out in February and started this running in June. I’m sure there will be many more, but I only hope this is the worst one.
