Goodbye Weight Watchers!

So my finger is finally all better and I got back into the gym last night! I feel like Weight Watchers is a waste of time and money for me right now. Part of my weight problem is that I don’t have time to eat well and work out. By putting meetings into my schedule, it gives me even less time, plus the stuff we talk about rarely applies to someone like me with a lifestyle like mine. I need to start a Punk rock Weight watchers or something. So I am going to just eat well and work out and I think I am gonna be fine. I rarely write down my points anyway and I just feel like a failure paying money to stand on a scale and being bored for an hour. I’m planning on hitting the gym in a little bit, and I’ve been eating pretty well today. I have thought about counting calories instead of points… so I might do that. Things are good, the finger thing set me back way more than it should have!

I have been concerned over the last (almost) two years that I’ve been going at just how female-centric the program really is (as well as being most commonly focused on families and holidays). Although they have created the Weight-Watchers for Men website, it’s not enough if you really want to go to the meetings and have that camaraderie that the women experience.

Of course, it partially has to do with how guys work versus how the ladies interact and think. A guys version of the meeting would probably be held at a sports bar that caters to healthier eating and snacking, a leader that is more of a football coach giving this week’s gameplan with play-by-play coverage of how to succeed. Hrm… this is starting to sound like a really good business idea…. Any sports bar owners out there who want to host a WW meeting for men with healthy snacks, followed by watching a season appropriate sports game?

Oh, and I meant to tell you that you do have this support group and we don’t have to have meetings to be there for each other. In fact, if you need some “live” support, let me know and I can give you my IM info or even my phone number. I think we need to encourage each other and sometimes the web just isn’t enough. :) And this goes for all the guys on here, I’ll be glad to give the support you need by phone or IM whenever.

I totally see what you are saying, Todd. Since my meeting last night was right after track practice, I took The Boy with me. He asked, “why are you the only guy?” Sometimes I ask that too. I know that there are several other guys that just drop their cash, weigh, then hit the door, because they don’t see their relationship with a bunch of hens. The reason I go is for an extra level of accountability. But that’s me. I know that if I just dropped the cash then hit the door that would be my only brush with WW during the week. The reason I know? Because I did it for almost a year and lost the same 5 lbs over and over.
I totally want to do a niche group like the one you and Charles are talking about. WW approves those, all it takes is a leader and a stable group of participants.

In the very end, FatBloggers is an online version of that niche group. The mission of FB is not to advocate for one program over another. At the base; we are all in this together. No excuses! Do something to eat less and move more. I expect you to continue checking in with your ups and downs. If you don’t… expect a virtual kick in the ass!

i’m not stopping accountability or healthy living, just WW. I expect and encourage you to kick my ass if I’m not checking in and I am thankful that you care enough to do it! I will weigh in by the end of the week, i should be good this week cuz I went to the gym monday and tuesday and moved a bunch of my stuff today… so far so good!

I know what you are saying because I have been there and done that. After you learn the flex point system is there a need to continue? I say yes and no. Yes, if you are self motivated and can stay with it. No, if you feel that you are all alone and get to the point of “Who cares” attitude.

I am in the last category and find myself looking at going back because I have slipped big time and need some motivation from other people (In person contact). Usually, there are one or two other guys at the meetings I have attended. The one thing that ticks me off is when you drop 5 lbs and all the ladies say “Men lose weight so easy”. If it was easy then I wouldn’t need to go to the meetings.
