Weight Watchers Weigh-In: Week 63

Cross-published on I Reject Your Reality…

Tonight at Meeting, Jan talked about creating a ’sabotage-free world’. This means that we have to examine the places we go (Kitchen, bedroom, living room, car, work, etc), that trigger a negative eating situation. I offered that my workplace was a ‘dangerous’ place for me because it is well stocked. I shop for the place and I do try to buy healthy choices, but the residents also want snacks and desserts and such. Occasionally, I am left alone to do paperwork. I have to be strong in the knowledge that there are homemade cookies in the house that are probably 10 points apiece. While they are under lock to keep the residents from moving through them like locusts. The problem, I have a key.

Just like the Environmental Protection Agency urges us to Reduce - Reuse - Recycle. We should protect our own environment by RECOGNIZING your trigger, REMOVING it and REPLACING it with a healthy alternative. To paraphrase Maverick in Top Gun, I live in a Target rich environment. And, try as I might, I cannot get the kids to eschew ice cream in favor of baby carrots. Of course the main problem is that I’m married to their dealer.

Right now, the triggers that I know are here in the house are… 2 cartons of ice cream & 1 gal. bucket, 2 boxes of Girl Scout cookies (**Now with REAL Girl Scouts!), a bag of tortilla chips with salsa in the fridge. It’s like an alcoholic living above the pub. Apparently, I bear my cross well (at least this week, I did).

(I really wish I could cue Kool & The Gang here… Celebrate good times… come on!) Ladies & Gentlemen… it was a BIG NIGHT!

Dude. Dude. That is un-freaking-believable. 6.2 pounds gone is like a first week loss. Musta been something your trainer said…

Nice job on this. You really have a lot to celebrate here.

Thanks for the encouragement that all of the FatBloggers offer (and receive in turn). I couldn’t do it without you!

Now… the pressure of knocking off at least 1.5 lbs for next Tuesday’s weigh-in.

    Super job! Really!

Jan is right on target that this task is easier if you can have sabotage-free zones or what I call a safe eating environment. But that does get tough when you live/work with others! It’s a situation that calls for careful negotiations/compromises.

On the trigger foods… OK, if wife and daughters *must* have ice cream sometimes, do they have to store it in quantity in the house? I’m thinking maybe they could be talked into eating it outside of the home sometimes and then when bringing it into the home, simply bring in only one carton, preferably a smallish one that they can eat, then it will be gone and no longer there as a temptation.

I remember as a child, we did not eat dessert on a regular basis. It was always an occasional treat. And I remember that when we wanted ice cream, we’d all get on our bikes and Dad would take us across town to get our cones. Which we would enjoy and then bike back. Maybe you could find a similar way to approach this sort of thing with your family. Perhaps coupled with a really loving talk on why having this stuff in the house is very hard for you right now.

As for the GS cookies… I was a Girl Scout and sold cookies up the kazoo. Prime selling pitch for people who “didn’t need cookies right now” was that the GS cookies would freeze well. Tuck those boxes in a freezer, or better still, have your wife do it. Tell her to put them out of sight. With luck, you’ll forget about them.

Remember, if this fare isn’t healthy for you to consume all the time… it’s not healthy for your family either, regardless of whether they have any current weight problems or not. You don’t want them not to be able to have things they enjoy, but at the same time, it need not be a daily affair.

Salsa, by the way, can be quite tasty on eggs or chicken or fish! Just ditch the chips. Or see if a slightly healthier substitute can be found.

But my hat is off considering how well you are doing in the face of the temptations! I don’t think I could do as well. With the ice cream, maybe, as that’s never been a huge trigger for me. But the chips, I’d be all over those in a heartbeat!
