Here we are at Week 6, the Half-way point of this little competition. After the Week 4 check-in, I was trailing Justin in the # of pounds lost. From what I hear, he is really going after it. A little bird told me that he is running a 2-mile road course. (WOW) There is a possibility that his PT was just telling me this while trying to convince me to sign up for the RAC’s half-marathon in May… I don’t think I am there yet. And Roberta is tearing it up on the racquetball court, I get the impression that she is an animal on the court.
As it is the 1/2 way point, Mikki told me that next week there will be a bodyfat analysis to get a true measure of this competition. I guess I’ll have to take it easy on the chocolate bunnies and jelly beans.
After all, it’s the bodyfat percentage that earns one of us a dinner at Hamley’s.
Anton, A drumroll please…
Week 0 - 317.2 lbs. (02/04/08)
Week 1 - 312.9 lbs.
Week 2 - 311.7 lbs.
Week 3 - 308.0 lbs.
Week 4 - N/A
Week 5 - 307.3 lbs.
Week 6 - 305.1 lbs.
Total Loss - 12.1 lbs.
Pain is weakness leaving the body.

I did it! I finished my first 5K race in under 30 minutes.
26:50! That is the official “unofficial time”. The official time will be closer to 26:55 due to the 5 seconds it took us to get to the starting line after the whistle was blown. Hopefully the official results will be posted later today.
The race went better than I could have ever imagined. 26:55 is nearly 2 minutes better than my fastest 5K to date. The adrenalin help some I am sure but what helped even more was having my Dad and my brother-in-law set the pace… and having my Dad right there acting as cheerleader the whole way.

As for the race itself, I felt real good until we finished the second mile. We petty quickly settled into a good pace and passed quite a few people in the first mile and a half. That alone was an awesome feeling, being the one doing the passing instead of the other way around.

At the 1 and 2.5 mile marks there was a huge hill..well it felt huge at the time. I did great coming up the hill the first time around, but that second hill just about killed me.

Luckily just over the top of the hill was all our cheering fans. Seeing everybody there gave me the last little boost I needed to get across the finish line in under 27 minutes.

The race was everything I hoped it would be. A celebration of all my accomplishments thus far. A great bonding experience with my dad. A personal achievement I never would have imagined a year ago!
So now the question is, what’s next? We’ll talk about that tomorrow.

first of all, i know it’s been a while. as you can imagine, the cruise set me back big time. i’m working on a great post that will talk all about the cruise, the food they have, and what it looks like. look for that in a few days.
also, as a lot of you know, i have been working pretty closely in the past doing some freelance work with a guy named pete thomas. for those keen individuals, you may remember pete thomas as the guy who won $100,000 on the second season of the biggest loser for losing the most weight while at home. he lost 183 pounds, and has kept it off. he’s been quite an inspiration to me.
i wanted to let you guys and gals know, that if you live in, around, or even in the general vicinity of detroit, michigan… pete thomas is now working with nbc and bl4 productions to help cast a team for the upcoming sixth season of the biggest loser. it’s going to be a couples season again, and a casting call will be held at gardner white furniture, 45300 Hayes Rd. Macomb, MI 48044 on saturday, march 22nd from 10am - 4pm.
if you are interested, check out the flier attached here for more information.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL
213.6!!!!!!! That’s what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of 2.4!!
It’s a whole new me. A new hair cut, a clean shave and a new weight class!!!!
So now we can celebrate. I am officially no longer obese!!!
A quick recap. According to the charts a Body Mass Index of 30 or greater is considered obese. Now that I am under 214 my BMI has dropped to 29.8. Which means, I am now moderately overweight and no longer obese!
So why shave the beard?

I have not been clean shaven in 5 years. And I only did it then for a roll I was playing. I have had a beard pretty stead since I graduated college 12 years ago. I have not seen what my face looks like naked and thin in more than a decade. I wanted to see it again.
When I was heavy and clean shaven I always looked like a fat 12-year old. It was not a good look. Now it’s not so bad.
Beyond that the shave is a symbolic gesture. A clean start with this new life.
With so many things coming together, the race, the BMI, the 214 goal, this weekend is starting to feel like the culmination of this journey. Maybe not the end of the journey, but the end of the first chapter. Or maybe the end of the first book in a trilogy. I’ll talk more about it on Monday along with my plans for my new goals.
Next time you see me I will be an official 5K finisher! You’ll get the full race rundown on Monday…unless I can find Internet access somewhere this weekend.
Have a great weekend everybody!
Don’t forget the Great Clothing Giveaway. You can find it here.

I did my second day of Couch to 5k today. After going to the gym Monday and yesterday I decided to take a day off and I’ll hit the weights again tomorrow! I went to WW today and I am only .5 a pound down from last week. Not doing too well, but I am getting into better habits! I have worked out every day this week and I’ve been eating pretty well too. I didn’t get to eat much all day yesterday and after band practice I was starving. Wendy’s was open and those damn “baconator” commercials kept running through my head. So i had one and it was way too much meat! I felt my arteries clog up as I was eating it, but it was pretty good anyway
That probably was not the best decision the day before WW but i’m looknig for a big loss next week now!
Starting Weight (Aug. 1, 2007): 270 lbs.
Starting BMI: 37.7
Weight Last Week (Mar. 5, 2008): 260 lbs.
Weight Today (Mar. 12 2008): 259.5 lbs.
Current BMI: 36.2
Weight Change This Week: -.5 lbs
Total Weight Lost: -10.5 lbs.
NEXT GOAL: 245 lbs. (14.5 lbs. to go)
P.S. As you can probably tell, I stole this posting format here… next thing you know I’ll be wearing t-shirts with my weight on them
I’m such a poser!

I didn’t have a good feeling about tonight. I was in an all-day training in Boardman — The Garden Spot of Oregon on the topic of proper documentation in billing Medicaid for services to Mental Health clientèle. I can FEEL your envy is surging through the screen right now. Plus, I am currently suffering a bit of discomfort that would definitely fall into the TMI realm.
Anton, A drum roll please…

I have talked a couple of times about the massive closet purges I have gone through this past year as I have shrunk my trunk. Twice now I have emptied my closet. I am finally feeling at a point where I can start buying some nice clothes again without fear of shrinking out of them in two months.
Unfortuntly restocking the closet is an expensive undertaking. Doubly so when you are restocking your wife’s closet as well. (She is down nearly 45 pounds!)
It’s a happy problem to have, but an expensive one.
I figured since I have all these nice clothes just lying around, maybe I could make the closet purging a little less painful for you guys by giving away all my old clothes… some of which are only a few months old.
I know we have the new exchange area on the site, and I will post this there as well, but the exchange dosen’t seem to be running yet I wanted to stick this on the main page so you guys would be sure to see it.
I have 39 items of my old clothes to give away ranging from dress pants and shirts to casual wear. Most all of it is in good to excellent condition.
All I ask is that you pay the shipping cost for me to send the clothes to you.
I wish I could ship the clothes out on my dime, but as a poor father of two who has recently shelled out more than expected to restock all the closests in the house I just can’t justify the cost.
To see all the details and the clothes head here
The giveaway will last for the next two weeks. It’s first come first serve and you are welcome to claim as many items as you wish.
Happy Shopping.

This week, I declared war on sugars and sweets. If you review my menu, you’ll see that there was a dramatic cut in desserts. I still did natural sweets (fruit, juices), a few snack items, and protein bars, but other than that, you’ll have a difficult time finding the old habit of a dessert at the end of every lunch and dinner.
The reason was mostly for my gout because it is still hanging in there (though doing the best today that it’s been since last Monday). However, I also decided that this would be something I stick with to fight off the gout and to kick start my weight-loss in the right direction.
This is my fifth straight week of losses on the scale and I want to see what I can do to keep up the momentum. Even my “celebration” dinner tonight was a Chick-Fil-A wrap with only part of the dressing, some baked tortilla chips, salsa and water. It’s a celebration because that was actually what I was craving more than sweets. Of course, I had not eaten nearly enough during today because I forgot to bring some fruit for snacking. This will have enhanced my loss somewhat, but I still think most of it was that winning battle against desserts.
I’ve kept up my exercise routine as well. I’ve only missed a couple of sessions due to my gout, but I ended up doing some while working through the pain of that ankle (in fact, sometimes it felt better after the workout than before). Like John quotes from his trainer, pain is weakness leaving the body. I’m here to say goodbye to gout and goodbye to that old me. The new me is here to stay and make me an even healthier man as I get closer to goal.

You could have probably guessed by my lack of posting here that life has been pretty hectic. But then again, who’s isn’t?I continue to plug along with my various sources of accountability and motivation on this life project. Mikki, my Personal Trainer for this particular project, has been ruthless but also encouraging. She makes sure to tell me when I’m making improvements as well as spurring me to try new things and to never give up. Apparently, during our session today I made a face while executing the 145th leg press that showed determination/pain that she interpreted as a not nice thought. It really wasn’t. It was the look of forcing another chunk of weakness out of my body.
There really wasn’t an official weigh-in last week due to the aforementioned hectic life. But that’s ok, because I think that it was UP and we are moving right along (grin).
Anton, A drumroll if you please…

At various locations around my blog, I have posted some really spectacular tools that you could use for you own weightloss journey. Thanks to Tim at 2Big for pointing the way, I have joined another weightloss community called, Traineo.
Traineo is free and has a number of different ways you can journal the ways you are transforming your body and lifestyle. If you are looking for ways to add to your support structure, Traineo can connect you with others in your area that are making the same transformation. Usually when I search for ‘People Near Me’ on these types of sites, there is NO ONE! Because I live in an area that, when the Oregon Trail Pioneers saw it they said, “Nah, lets keep going” (Lewis & Clark did it too). Surprisingly, there were a number of people in Pendleton, Hermiston, Milton-Freewater, Walla Walla and up toward the Tri-Cities.
In the left sidebar of my blog, in the section My Other Stuff you will find this button.

Now that I am past the 1/2 point of my transformation, I chose the button that tells me (and you) how much further I need to go. Like the Pioneers, it’s nice here, but I want to keep going!
