You know that sometimes you’ll hit the scale and you expect to see your weight go up. Well, that was me this week and I was in for a small surprise. I lost 0.4 pounds this week. I think that is pretty darn good considering that large margarita I had last night at Don Pablo’s. Still I had the Mama’s skinny enchiladas and talked Amy out of the queso and got the guacamole instead.
One of the suggestions from Weight-Watchers when eating out is to “stop, rest and assess”. This means that about halfway through your meal, put your fork/spoon/chopsticks down, wait a few minutes and assess your level of hunger. If you’re full, stop completely, otherwise, you should probably continue. I managed to do that at Don Pablo’s without consciously trying. I was about 2/3 through the enchiladas when I realized I didn’t want any more. I never ate the last enchilada and just left it on my plate. That was an empowering feeling.
However, as noted in my previous post on my personal blog, I have also been busy around the house and that can make a difference in what the scale shows. Especially when I usually only have two meals when home from work and I had Sunday and Tuesday at home to hang stuff, vacuum, and generally help in cleaning up around here.
I’m gonna work harder at this, because I want to post losses every week, not just every week or so.
Starting weight: 319.0 lb
Previous weight: 286.2 lb
Current weight: 285.8 lb
Current loss/gain: -0.4 lb
Total loss/gain: -33.2 lb

I got back on the treadmill today after a taking it easy for the last two weeks and I won’t lie to you, it was tough going for the first couple of miles. Then inspiration arrived in the form of a man named Dan.
Dan got on the next treadmill over, cranked it to 8.5 miles an hour and started a conversation. While I was huffing and puffing away at 5.5 miles an hour, barely able to talk, Dan was chatting away as if we were sitting at Caribou Coffee enjoying a nice latte.
Turns out Dan is a trialthalte and a friend of my friend Anthony who is also a triathlete. They both competed in this years Iron Man World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.
Normally I stop running after I reach my 5K, but today I hit 3.1 miles without even noticing and just kept on running and chatting with Dan. Before Dan got on the Treadmill I had to take two walk breaks. After he got on the treadmill I forgot all about my aching legs and just kept on trucking.
Thanks Dan, for helping me get back into the swing of things.
Happy New Year everybody! I for one am really excited to see where this new year is going to take us.

p.s. Sorry about missing my weigh-in last week. Honestly I completly forgot about it. As you can see I did a bit of overindulging over the holiday’s. The white t-shirts will return this Friday.

If you are currently a member of Weight-Watchers or plan to become one over the next few weeks, GET THERE EARLY FOR YOUR MEETING! I dunno what it is about the new year that makes everyone want to suddenly join. ;) (Of course, the current special of free registration doesn’t hurt attendance.) Anyway, the lines will be extra long with new members who are filling out paperwork and weighing in and paying for the first time.
In fact, if you’re a long-time member, volunteer to help out in passing out registration forms and stuff to help everyone along. Nothing like having a new member show up at the counter without knowing about the paperwork and options. Also, if possible, reserve new purchases for a future meeting or wait until after the meeting to buy snack bars and stuff. That will allow more time to process the newbies and make everyone happier!
Just try to be more patient during this time and encourage the new guys/gals who have decided to take that first step. They may become a longtime member and a new friend. After a few weeks, this will slowly return to normal.

Hey everybody, Happy New Year, and I hope your holidays have been good to you. It’s hard to believe I started out this blog just about a year ago. At the time, I thought I was just going to have a couple of contributors and maybe a few readers. Little did I know what it would turn into just a year later! Big kudos to John T. for taking this thing over and doing such good work with it the last few months. Even though I haven’t been writing much lately, I read everything that comes across here and comment as I can. Everybody has a great story on here.
I’m going to be starting Weight Watchers again soon, like in the next week or two, so I’ll be checking in on a regular basis. I’m nowhere near my top weight of a year ago, but I have put on some extra pounds. I just don’t want to let it get out of hand again. Plus I have a little added motivation: I managed to get myself engaged over Christmas, so I’d kinda like to look/feel good for that important event coming up. I’ll let you know when it happens.
Oh, and if you haven’t already, be sure and upgrade your WordPress install to 2.3.2. Apparently, there was a fairly significant bug that needed to be fixed in 2.3.1. WordPress proves time and time again how good they are as an open source community: These things get taken care of before they become problems.
Have a great 2008 everybody.
