Workout Buddy

01-30-08

One of my co-workers has volunteered to be a workout buddy.  This gives us both accountability since he wants to get back into a regimen just like I want to start one.  However, I have a feeling that I’ll be completely wasted by the end of next week.

We’ll be starting Monday at lunch with a 1.5 mile walk/jog, then 20-30 minutes weight training at the fitness room in his building (I work in the executive offices where there is no fitness center), then I walk/jog/crawl back to my building.  He works in the other building so he’ll start off by jogging over to my building where I join him for the trip back.  He gets in the full 3 miles before weight-training whereas I only have to do half.  I’m sure I won’t get anywhere near a jog on the trip back.

Now he plans for us to do this Monday through Thursday.  He’s already given me a list of specific stretches to do before he gets to my building.  He also has given me homework of 30 situps every night until we start (he says this will help with any back issues I may have starting out).

I just completed 27 situps (my abdominal muscles then called for a revolt so I quit).  I followed up with 10 pushups (on my knees, I’ve never been able to do full body pushups).  I’m now gonna crash for the night.

If I don’t post Tuesday night, it will be because I couldn’t even move my mouse I’ll be so tired.

One more step forward in spite of the previous week I’ve had. Yes, I’m over my spite at losing the job opportunity. Yes, I’ll try to work on my personal development. Yes, I’ll try not to have pizza two days in a row over a weekend (but it was SO good).

In all, I had one of those weeks where I should have gained a ton just because of my anger, depression and poor choices. But mixed in there was a lot of good choices. In fact, had I not done most of the bad, imagine the good I could have accomplished. So I know I have to focus more on the good. I only had soda one day in the last week. Though I ate out a few times, almost all of the choices were healthy (love me a tuna sub-of-the-day at Subway on Fridays with no mayo or cheese and lots of veggies).

I’ve got someone at work who now wants to be my workout buddy. He can help me with a workout regimen (he used to be in the military) and it’ll keep him on a schedule since he’s now accountable to me. I can’t tell you how much it means to have someone you are accountable to.

At least I won’t suffer the temptations this Sunday that most people will since I don’t watch any sports.  So my wife and I can get some housework done and other errands without having to sit in front of a television munching down on more calories than any single athlete will be burning on that field (just think about that).

I’ve been reticent to post until I knew more, but I’m not sure that time will ever come, so here it goes…

I attended an interesting meeting last night at my gym to get a number of us on the same page for a competition that will be both a means to help 6 (3 guys, 3 girls) people get on the road to health and fitness and a publicity ’stunt’ for the gym and the local paper. Beginning with the Sunday edition (Superbowl Sunday no less) I, along with 5 other people will be featured as we personal train, diet and blog ourselves through 12-weeks, February – April. Next week, I meet with a personal trainer to get measured in every possible way as well as have a new routine done. I believe that I will be meeting with her 2x/week for the duration. There is also a meeting with the hospital dietitian, I am curious there due to my success with the Weight Watchers plan.

Cut back 2 weeks to when Neal asked me to be a part of this. He wanted me to think about it because of the newspaper/blog aspect. I told him that I had been blogging my journey for over a year. He thought that was great, The Wife asked, “Yeah, but how many people that you actually know look at your blogs?” She had a good point. There is a BIG difference between you and the people I see at my daughters’ basketball games or at the grocery store. The ones that will see my picture in the paper with my progress stats printed there in black and white. This is, after all, a small town.

Yes, and the blog itself, I will be adding a 3d blog to my life. There will be one on the EO website where all of the competiters and trainers will be posting.  I’ll post a direct link there, once one is set up.

Stay tuned…

starting 2008 weight: 364
this week’s weigh-in: 358.8
total weight loss this week: 2.8 pounds

it happened again this week. i am REALLY struggling at getting back to tracking everything i eat, but nevertheless, i still lost weight. i attribute it mainly to the lessons i learned in the three months i was hardcore about tracking everything i ate, along with the knowledge i’ve gained in proper portions and healthy foods. nevertheless, it makes me wonder how much better i could be doing if i really gave it my all.

and still, i have yet to begin exercising in earnest. granted, i’ve been doing a lot of housework, but nothing that i would say is committed as exercise. so again, i have to ask how much better would i be doing if i was working, even moderately hard at it?

so, while i am happy for the weight loss, it only really serves to make me wonder when it’s going to stop coming off so easily, and why i can’t just pick it up and work for it.

217.4! That’s what it said on the scale this morning. A loss of 1.8 pounds!

2174-front.jpg Sorry I haven’t been around much for the last two weeks. I’ve been lurking, just not writing. I’ve been struggling to get back on track after the holidays. Somewhere between the Santa shaped sugar cookies and the endless days of giant turkey sandwiches I lost the ability to say no to my cravings.

The scary part is I wasn’t even putting up an argument. When a craving struck I kowtowed with barely a whimper of protest. So last Monday I went into Standoff mode. It was me against my cravings and only one of us was making it out alive.

I am happy to report I am the last man standing. Although I think those cravings may have simply gone in to hiding. Just for safe measure standoff mode will continue next week. I have 1.2 pounds to go to get back to my pre-holiday low. The goal is to get there next friday.

Holy Moley

01-24-08

Here’s me, taken about a year ago or so, at about 300 pounds. I hated having my picture taken back then because I was, well, fat. My oldest son just happened to have a camera with him when he snuck this shot. I’m glad he did, too; I need a reminder somewhere about how I looked back then. I have no idea how many calories I took in each day, but it was a boat load. And I had the stomach and ass to show for it. No way I’m going back to that look again within my lifetime. Sadly, the Oregon State retro shirt headed for Goodwill after I lost all that weight last year, but that seems to have been the only casualty. I’m much happier where I’m at right now.

As you may or may not know, I’m back on WW after packing on a few pounds over the holidays. I’m on my third week now. Last Friday, I went to a great Mexican restaurant, and another evening my fiance and I enjoyed a really good bottle of red wine together. I’m not a bit regretful about either of those eating incidents. Moderation is the name of the game here, and I’m learning to balance enjoying food without constant overindulgence. So this week, I may not have lost much, and I may even have gone up and ounce or two. We’ll see how it goes. I’m just not worried about it. Weigh-in tonight, then off to a nice dinner with Susan sans kids.

What’s your fat story?

Two steps forward, one step back… at least it seems that way. I had a gain this week.. Though I could contribute it to choice of clothing (heck, it’s cold here in Texas for once) or any other excuse, it’s still a gain and I need to adjust accordingly. In this case, prepare my meals ahead of time (instead of going to the local Chinese place for takeout like I did today) and get started on a workout regimen (I have none at this moment).

I still spent most of my week making the best decisions I could about my menu. However, we didn’t do enough to eat at home as much as we should. We’re already making menu plans for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, we know that this weekend won’t be good (spending time with friends on Saturday night and then family on Sunday all day). So we have to really get hard core (yes, the pun about the core plan is intended) the next few days to counteract what is coming up.

i was thinking i would share some tips on how to eat healthy, and still be able to live on a budget. listen, it’s no secret that it costs more to eat healthy, even more if you a loony like me and prefer organic/fair trade/local foods. nevertheless, it is possible to have a semi-quick, healthy, and cheap dinner.

i don’t claim to be an expert. what will follow in this post and furthers posts, are really just what i’ve found to work for us. i would imagine they’d work for you too, but i don’t presume to know what’s best for you.

first, something about my life you must understand. my wife and i have a strict seventy-five dollar a week food budget. so everything we do must fit under that. that even includes dog and cat food, cleaning supplies, and bathroom items. so we are starting to get really good at fitting things in our budget and making the most of what we have. most of my friends and family are pretty astonished when i tell them how little we spend on groceries, and even more so when i tell them we don’t even shop at a discount grocery store.

so lets get this five part series started.

one – buy in bulk, use your freezer
this can apply to many different household items, but i’m focusing mainly here on meats. ryanne and i look for great deals on meats that have gone on clearance (this generally means it’s been sitting on their shelf too long). we both prefer poultry and pork to beef, and when possible we buy all-natural or even organic grade. we’ll usually buy a couple large “family” packs of chicken or boneless pork chops once every four-six weeks or so. the last time we purchased meat, we bought a bag of huge chicken breasts (each cut is big enough for a serving of meat for each of us), and a pack of i think 12 pork chops, and spent roughly fourteen – eighteen dollars combined for the both of them.

the next trick, is to prepare as soon as you get home. we individually wrap and season for a meal. meaning, we’ll take a chicken breast (or two pork loins), put them in a freezer bag with some marinade (we’re experimenting now with mrs. dash, which is a sodium free variety of marinade… the first one we tried we didn’t like), seal it, and place them in the freezer as soon as we get home from the grocery store. now, all you need to do for a meal is take what you need out of the freezer, get a vegetable (we generally go with frozen corn, broccoli, or green beans), and it’s pretty much a meal for the two of us. we also either grill everything, or cook it on our george foreman grill to further reduce fat content.

generally speaking, and i’m not kidding here, these dinners are not only filling but almost always come in at well under 500 calories, even if we add some sort of bread to the meal. this really helps at the end of the day, when you are just forced to eat some ice cream to get your full calorie intake for the day. those days REALLY suck (note: sarcasm).

starting 2008 weight: 364
this week’s weigh-in: 361.6
total weight loss this week: 3.4 pounds

this was a good week. well, it’s good because i lost weight, but it wasn’t the greatest as far as counting calories, and i didn’t exercise at all. so, all in all i guess i have to be happy. it is really tough to build up momentum, but i’m hoping with this weeks weigh-in, i’ll have a good start to build on. i feel like if i can just get the ball rolling, the weight will really start to come off.

now, i’ve just got to get this exercise thing worked out. pun intended.

holla!
