New poll
Here’s the next FatBloggers poll: How long has it been since you’ve had fast food? I’ve been on Weight Watchers since March, and those places definitely eat up points in a hurry, so I’ve tried to avoid fast food the last four and a half months or so. There was a time, though, where the drive-thru was a regular part of my routine, and I had the extra weight to show for it. I work with a lady who claimed that she lost 7 pounds in one week simply by not going to McDonald’s during that time. She didn’t change anything else in her lifestyle that week.
So this is an anonymous show of hands for all of you. How long has it been for you?

Hi Rick,
I haven’t been to a fast food restaurant since mid-April 2007. In that time, I’ve lost 32 lbs. when combined with a healthy diet and exercise. So yes, I would recommend to anyone who seriously wants to lose weight, to avoid fast food places entirely. BTW, I even avoide the fast food places that promote themselves as “healthy” and you know who they are.
Thanks for the post.

That brings up a great point, Jesse, and one I hadn’t thought about. I do go to Jared’s place occasionally, but it’s always for the 6-inch turkey with plenty of vegies and no mayo. Since my own bread consumption is way down, I consider this one of the few times that I allow myself that luxury. So maybe for the purposes of this poll, we’ll consider “fast food” to be a burger joint, taco place, etc…Anywhere you partook in the consumption of high fat calories.

1. Good, I voted before I read the comments. When I took an inventory I decided that Jared’s Place did NOT constitute ‘fast food’.
2. As much as WeightWatchers is all about, “You can eat anything so long as you track it”. I don’t see how you can continue to regularly patronize a fast food place and have success in this program. My favorite place has always been Jack in the Box. Tracking the points for my ‘regular’ meal there…
Jumbo Jack w/ cheese = 16.5
Medium Fries = 8 (large = 12)
Dr. Pepper = 3
TOTAL = 28 to 32 points for ONE meal!
YIKES!
btw… I haven’t been to Jack’s since I started last December. Let me tell you, that Sir Loin Burger looks GOOD!

Since May 18, 2007. It feels good to say that.

5 weeks, 2 days and 4 hours… and counting. I have never understood my cravings for fast food. I always end up with a stomachache and a general malaise after consuming it, yet I kept going back. Here’s to breaking the cycle.

I was once an addict for McDonald’s nuggets for about 3 months and gained more than 20 lbs. I stopped going there, but my weight is not coming down at all.

Tony, I agree with you. When I go a long period of time avoiding a fast food burger, or even the greasy ‘hot box’ stuff down at the convenience store, when you eat it the icky feeling arrives soon thereafter.
Why is it that we crave something that results in that feeling?

Because of how good it feels during, and for a few minutes immediately after we’re done eating it. That’s the high our body is chasing. I hear heroin makes you feel pretty good too right after you do it. That feeling doesn’t last either.
For me it’s only been about a week, we stopped at a DQ Brazier on the way back from an event at Falling Water. I just had a grilled chicken sandwich, which tasted pretty good. Before that though… I can’t even remember I had McD’s style fast food. I don’t count Subway as “fast food” either. I go there a couple times a month.

We keep coming back to Subway on here, don’t we. I just tried a half sandwich as a deli wrap (a tortilla, really). I haven’t done the math yet, but I’d like to see how one of those stacks up against an Italian roll. I’ll let you know what I find out.
