Upcoming vacation

Ok, this is where the rubber meets the road.  This is where the grease hits the pan.  This is where the…ok, you get the idea.

I’m going on vacation this Thursday.  I’m going to be out of my routine, and subjected to mostly eating out, although we’ll take quite a bit of stuff with us also.  I’ve been preaching it all this time myself, but it’s time to do some planning.  I can do Subway pretty well, and the hotel we’re staying at has a good breakfast set out with some good healthy choices.  I’m also going to bring along my running clothes so that I can find a place to keep up with my Couch-to-5k regimen.  We’ll have wireless in the hotel, so I’ll let you know how I’m doing along the way.

I went to a catered barbecue last night, and had a DELICIOUS 12-points dinner, complete with beef, potato salad, and homecooked beans.  Who says dieting has to be a drag?

10 Unconventional Diet Tips

Here’s an interesting article from LifeHack.org.  I’m not sure I agree with every single tip here, but most of them are spot on.  I especially thought this was interesting:

I was able to lose 50 pounds without dieting on the weekends. I found myself tired, depressed, and unmotivated if I tried to continue my diet into the weekend. I felt that Friday and Saturday (my weekend) was a time to celebrate 5 days of dieting.

Not dieting on weekends.  Hmm…I may have to ponder that one, but I don’t think I’m quite there just yet.  It worked for this guy, though, and if you’re working through some motivational issues, this just might be the ticket.

New poll & some site issues

This has been a great week for posts here at FatBloggers, maybe the best yet. I truly appreciate everybody’s candor, insightfulness, and willingness to open up. We’re all in this together.

I’ve included a section in our column called “Quotable”, which shows snippets of posts and comments that I’ve found particularly intriguing. If you’d like to nominate something some time, just let me know.

Also, our newest poll asks, as a percentage, how close are you to getting to your goal weight? I look forward to seeing how you’re all doing! Weekend, here we come…

Forgive me fatbloggers for I have binged.  I took almost 2 weeks off from working out, and really didn’t think twice about what I stuffed in my head.

I’ve really been in a tail spin ever since I was challenged at my “appt.” a couple of weeks ago to count calories.  I’ve always despised even the thought of counting calories.  I tried it for 3 meals and bailed…..

I’m currently unmotivated and couldn’t care less if I ever set foot on a treadmill ever again (I have walked 3 days this week so far).

 Thoughts or encouragements?……..

Outside the comfort zone

Last weekend we traveled to Michigan to attend and celebrate my wife’s youngest brother’s high school graduation.  Of course this meant there was copious amounts of delicious and not terribly healthy food available, that I had no hand in preparing, so I had to guess, poorly, at the calories.  I found myself immediately drawn back into my old eating habits - eating fast, wanting to get seconds, popping down an extra piece of coffee cake standing at the counter.  It’s scary how quickly being outside my comfort zone affected my eating.  I tried to be conscious of it, and I was able to eat less than I really wanted to, but it was a LOT harder than when I’m at home.  I’ve gone to Michigan twice since the diet started, and both times, I gained weight while away from home.  I’m sure there’s stress involved there, but it’s still scary. I’m not sure what this means - perhaps it just serves as a reminder for how fragile weight-loss can be, and how hard it is to break habits, especially the bad ones.

On a better note, this visit was the first time I’d seen quite a few family members since I’ve lost a lot of weight, and I don’t think there was a single person that didn’t comment to me to my wife about how good I looked (which is code for less fat than before).  This is nice, but I’m really not used to being the center of attention, so it was a little awkward.  I guess it’s a good problem to have though, I’m not complaining. :)

Cool down at the GP

I’m in the middle of Week 4 of my Couch to 5k plan, and tonight’s workout involved two sets each of a 3-minute run, followed by a 5-minute run, with sufficient walking time in between.  A few weeks ago this wouldn’t have been possible.  Tonight was a great run.  I completed both sets with energy to burn.  I’m nowhere near ready for that 5k yet, but I’ll get there soon.

I’m down at the Great Pacific Wine & Coffee Company, and getting my weekly treat of a cream cheese bagel with something from the tap.  Tonight it’s a Full Sail, from just down the road in Hood River.  If you have never been to the GP, it’s quite the cultural oasis in this small town.

I was browsing the news from the weight loss world when I found these reports on our chances of keeping the weight off after a big loss:

Big Weight Loss More Likely To Stick:

A new study suggests people who lose large amounts of weight are more likely to keep it off.

This next article seems to contradict the first:

Americans Can Maintain Weight Loss

Unfortunately, those with more weight to lose were those more likely to regain, according to the study now appearing online and in the July issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

Although it does have some otherwise encouraging words:

“Weight maintenance following weight loss is doable,” said lead author Edward Weiss, a medical epidemiologist with the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity. “We’re still learning the things that are necessary for weight maintenance in the long run.”

I like this next article from CBN.com the best.  It suggests exercise as the best way to keep the pounds off after losing weight:

Many people believe that dieters who lose weight usually gain it back. But a new survey finds that six of 10 people keep most of the weight off a year later.

And nearly eight percent are still losing weight.

So there you have it, a small collection of some of the weight loss news I’ve been reading while getting a small meal at my favorite hangout.  Now you’re up to date.

Week 13

Drum roll please, Anton…down 4.4 pounds this week for a grand total of 46.2 pounds lost since March 6.  At 255.2 pounds, I’m a little over ten pounds shy of my goal weight.

Last Saturday, I went and had fish and chips with an amber fermented beverage.  I didn’t post a guilty, woe-is-me-I-am-undone message because, well, I didn’t feel a bit guilty about it.  I just thought I’d be down a little less this week.  My running regimen is starting to pay off, I think.

You Can Do It!

I ran across this guys website this morning named appropriately: BEAST SKILLS

Now that is pretty darn impressive and I’m sure with drive, determination AND plenty of physical therapy I could do that. But then I read that he’s 25 and a former competitive gymnast. Not only that, but a gymnast that was in one of those touring groups that do things JUST to be impressive.

But… DANG!
