How to Lose a Pound of Fat

It’s perfectly possible to lose fat simply by exercising, but it takes quite a bit of time and effort. Remember, one pound of body fat is roughly equivalent to 3500 calories.

To burn sufficient calories to lose one pound of body fat, you might:

  • Briskly walk a total of 35 miles
  • Swim moderately fast for 6 hours
  • Dance for 12 hours
  • Play about 12.5 hours of golf, carrying your own clubs
  • Jog for about 29 miles

Somehow I think that you have to make this kind of investment ONLY if you are downing a pint of Ben & Jerry’s every night.

Well I’m pretty sure you’re making the argument that diet is almost always neccesary to lose weight, but if you argue that a pound of fat is 3500 calories then what would it hurt to eat an additional 3000 calories over your maintenance? In the short term, you’re not going to gain a whole pound of fat in one day, but it certainly will add up if you do it many days at a time. The same is true of exercise. If you get out and do an hour of intense cardio every night you’ll probably be burning 800-1000 calories and putting on lean muscle as well (which helps burn even more calories through the day.) which, in a perfectly mathematical world would mean you’d be burning an extra lb of fat every 4 or 5 days not to mention all of the benefits that come along with regular exercise. I’m convinced a combination of both is the only way to get good long term results :) Not saying that you don’t think the same way, I just wanted to take a look at it from another angle.

When I want to eat something “questionable” I look at it from the perspective - how long will I have to work it off because I’m sure I don’t want to keep whatever fat it will store on me! Thinking that way has kept me from overdoing on ALOT of things! :-)

im about to start an exercise routine. im going to do 6 hours of riding my exercise bike, at 16 miles per hour. im going to take in about 2000 calories everyday, so that starvation mode thing is out of the picture, and i burn about 1800 calories just doing nothing. so with this i’ll be burning slightly over a pound. i there anything im missing to lose a pound of ***FAT*** per day???

Yeah…your rear end is going to get really sore in a hurry with a regimen like that. My advice: Don’t plan on losing a fixed amount of weight every day. It just ain’t gonna happen no matter what you do. Instead, stick with your 2000 calories, find a way of getting some cardiovascular exercise on a regular basis (3-4x/week is plenty) and let nature take it’s course. Oh, and the attorney in me is screaming out to tell you to consult your health care provider before beginning on a weight loss plan.

Yeah, I heard that alot, before I started. I just wanted to see what you would say if you thought I was a newcomer. I have been doing this for 2 weeks and counting now, and my rear end if okay. I have lost a little over 15 pounds already, and dont plan on stopping. Thanks for the reply, but I think you should actually try my routine out before you say it just wont happen. It actually gets me upset sometimes, when people are all about the place saying its not possible, when all you need to do is sit down in front of your tv, and just pedal. It is possible…

When you first start losing weight, you lose a lot of it right away. Over the weeks and months, though, you see a lot more fluctuation in the amount you lose every week. My experience is that I can lose less than a pound one week, and over five the next, even though I don’t change anything. Kudos to you for hitting it hard. That’s commendable. I would just hate to see you get discouraged if you come up a little shorter than expected some time. I’ve been there myself, and that’s when it’s easy to just say screw it and give up.

Personally, I don’t have six hours a day to spend on an exercise bike, so that wouldn’t be possible for me. But I can imagine a tremendous amount of weight loss if you’re able to accomplish that. Let us know how you’re doing.

Well the secret behind me being able to do that much hours is one, I’m on summer break, and have absolutely nothing to do all day, and two, break up the six hours or 360 minutes throughout the day. Yes, it is impossible to do all that at one time, but six, 1 hour segments, that I can do…
