An idea

My back might convince me otherwise in the morning, but I have an idea to further support my weight loss and general physical fitness.  I went for a walk along our levy tonight, and I found myself doing something I hadn’t done for a long time.  I jogged.

I didn’t set out to do this, but I wanted to get my heart rate up a little more quicly than just walking alone.  So, I began alternating running/walking at 50 yard intervals.  That’s about the distance that the walkway lights are set apart.  I did this for a couple of miles.

Then I had a thought.  What if I began training for a simple 5k run to take place some time later this summer?  We’re not talking about a marathon, a half-marathon, or even a 10k run.  Just five kilometers, 3.1 miles.

I’m thinking about this.  Let me know how crazy I am.

    Go for it.

I’d recommend the Couch to 5K program. You could get there in 9 weeks.

Thanks for the idea…Just doing a search tonight, there’s a 5k run close to here in the middle of July. That’s roughly 9 weeks away. I’ll google Couch to 5k and see what I come up with.

I just finished up the program. My advice - start slow. That kept me from progressing quick enough. There’s a free podcast on iTunes that might help if you’re interested.

Here’s the link with the plan.

Yep, just found it. I’m going to have to start with Week 2 to make it to the 5k run in July, but I can do it. I didn’t see the podcast; I’ll definitely check that out. I load my iPod up on podcasts before I go out for my exercise. Thanks again for the information.

It is definitely a good goal.

I don’t run unless chased, however, there is a 500 mile bike ride across Iowa every summer, that I have my eye on for summer 2008.

That isn’t crazy at all - it’s a great idea! I am allergic to running (honest - really I am!) — but for others I think it’s great. Instead of running I do manage to get out and walk a bit and use my stationary bike - also I just ordered a new piece of equipment — fluidity, I hope to be posting about how it works out once it arrives.
