24/7 Gym

The (Pendleton) East Oregonian reports in their Sunday, May 20th edition that the Round-Up City is getting a second gym, Club 24 is expected to open later this summer.

Pendleton has one VERY large athletic facility, The Round-Up Athletic Club. It’s one of those  “all things to all people” places, with raquetball, pool, aerobics, spinning, cardio and weights along with all the other things you pay for but never use. Since it is the ONLY game in town you have to go at certain times to avoid having to stand in line to get to the equipment. I have often wished that someone would open a smaller single purpose gym without running into the problems folks in the nearby town of Hermiston have experienced lately. One morning members show up to work-out to find the place boarded up.

Club 24 will open in an empty space at our ‘mall’ and will be just what the name implies: a 24 hour gym, accessible to members by a card similar to those used to get into your motel room. I belonged to this type of gym when I lived in Ontario, OR in the mid-90’s. It is convenient, you can workout when you get off work at 1am or other odd hours. But, as I mentioned above, the gym in Ontario wasn’t too financially sound and one day I went to workout… and the place was empty.

I’m looking forward to checking this place out. Maybe it will be a better deal than the $57/month I’m paying at the RAC?

Have any of you had experience with 24-hour cardlock gyms?

I hadn’t heard about this one, John. I’d definitely be interested in a gym like that, one without all of the social issues of the RAC. I am getting so insular in my old age.

Doug, Is your gym 24-hour card lock access? Or an “open 24-hours” type place?
Have you ever went in the wee hours?
